Age-Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD)

How can ARMD Macular Degeneration be Treated?

An inactive product, the verteporfin, is used, and it sets on abnormal vessels. It can be activated with cold laser (without burning anything), to destroy this vascular tissue. This treatment is called photodynamic therapy.

The photodynamic therapy is an imaging exam which, through the use of different contrasts or dyes, allows the study of the normal physiology of the retina and the choroid. Different pathological processes can also be studied.

With this therapy, we have obtained encouraging results that suggest that eyesight loss can be decelerated and, in some cases, stopped.

Verteporfin is injected in the blood. When there is a sufficient amount in the eye, it is activated by using an especially designed laser. For the treatment with laser, a drop of local anesthetic can be applied in the eye and one contact lens should be used. When the verteporfin is activated with this type of laser, the abnormal blood vessels of the macular degeneration are affected and closed. In this way, the filtration of liquid and blood is reduced.

Since these blood vessels tend to open again, it will be necessary to go back to the ophthalmologist to take photos of the back of the eye. If the appearance of abnormal blood vessels is noticed again, the treatment has to be repeated. This can occur up to four times per year.

In these types of treatment, it is very important to follow the post-treatment instructions provided by our clinics, by the professionals assigned to the case, since very strict recommendations must be followed. The results are more encouraging than with the previous treatments, with regards to final eyesight results.

Retinal Detachment

How can Retinal Detachment be Treated?

Depending on the stage of the retinal detachment, different types of treatments can be carried out, and all of them are surgical:

In initial stages or before the appearance of tearing, the treatment can be:

  • With argon laser, to close the tearing or breakage that caused the retinal detachment, creating a scar in the borders of the tearing, by freezing or applying laser. A welding or blockage of the tearing can be achieved.

  • Silicone belts or pieces are implanted, to try to push the retina to its place, and push the wall of the ocular globe towards the retina.

  • When the retina has detached, the vitrectomy is a more adequate treatment, because it entails a more complex surgery from inside the eye, without a great delay. The surgery is urgent if the detachment include the central retina or not.

Depending on the state of the patient’s health, and the estimated duration of the intervention, local or general anesthesia can be used.

What is Vitrectomy?

Vitrectomy is a microsurgical technique to remote the vitreous by means of cutting and vacuuming systems, to maintain the intraocular pressure stable.

Additionally, this technique allows different maneuvers to be done from inside the eye for the treatment of different diseases:

-     Segmentation and cutting of membranes over the retina

-     Extraction of subretinal membranes

-     Intraocular diathermy

-     Endophotocoagulation

Diabetic Retinopathy

How is Diabetic Retinopathy Treated?

The treatment options are greater if there is an early diagnosis.

Its goal is to stop the advance of injuries and to improve the quality of vision, if possible. Photocoagulation can be carried out with argon laser, to decrease the macular edema or to prevent the neovascularization and advance of injuries. If the retinopathy is detected in its first stages, laser surgery can decelerate the rhythm of eyesight loss.

The cases of advanced retinopathy can require surgical treatment by means of vitrectomy. In this manner, vitreous hemorrhages, tractions and retinal detachment can be treated.
